El Viento Sopla en Borrascas

A historian finds a photograph and cannot put it down. It shows Refugio Suecia, the wooden hut where Otto Nordenskjold's Swedish expedition wintered in between 1901-1903 and 21 year old Argentine Jose Maria Sobral became the first of his countrymen to do science there. Weeks later, Teo Salvarrey boards a military plane south, invited to spend ninety days working over the shelter he has read about in Sobral's diary. On an isolated island, with no showers, no beds, no heating, and a sun that never sets, five people keep the shelter standing: melting glacier ice, digging a freezer into permafrost, rationing food between helicopter drops. Working over the hut becomes its own strange relationship with the past. A glacial stream keeps pushing century old relics up through the mud, which Teo sorts by hand, unsure what for. The past he is only supposed to be studying starts filtering into his present. Total disconnection becomes its own kind of crisis. In a hyperglobalized world, being left alone with oneself is one of the hardest things to survive. Weeks pass without a word from Buenos Aires, from family, from anything else, while on both sides of the mirror food runs thinner by the week. Sobral's diary names the same double bind a century earlier: no ship, no letter, no way of knowing if home remembers them, and fewer seals and penguins each day to keep them fed. Hunger is only the visible half of it. What both men are really afraid of is disappearing completely, becoming someone no one back home can confirm still exists. Then reality itself begins to turn strange. A hooded figure walks toward him through blowing snow. Swedish voices bleed into his sleep from nowhere. Teo learns to hold the pressure: cooking becomes ritual, climbing becomes thinking as much as searching for signal, and the stream beneath the permafrost becomes a way of enduring. A century earlier, the crisis reaches its own breaking point. The Antarctic, the ship meant to collect them, is trapped in the ice. Months pass with no rescue. Then, one grey afternoon, three ragged men appear on the horizon: survivors of the wrecked Antarctic. Only then does Sobral's group understand their ship is gone, and that they were alone. Around the same time, a storm seals Teo's camp inside one tent for days, and what comes apart in his sleep is the closest the film gets to admitting isolation is not only weather.
